The Naturalisation Interview
After the written test, the biggest hurdle often follows: the personal interview before the naturalisation commission of your municipality. It is not just about factual knowledge, but about your personal motivation and integration.
Master the interview
Impressing the naturalisation commission means being prepared, not just having memorised facts. The app trains you with numerous questions on federal, cantonal and municipal levels, so you have an answer for everything.
The app is available in German, French, Italian and Romansh. The naturalisation test is held in the local language.
1. Authenticity is Key
The commission wants to know why you want to become Swiss. Prepare for questions about your social life: Where do you shop? Which clubs are you active in? What do you particularly like about your place of residence?
2. Knowledge of the Municipality
Specific knowledge about your place of residence is often tested: Who is the municipal president? When was the last village festival? What are the main employers? Show genuine interest in your immediate surroundings.
3. Preparation for Critical Questions
Questions about current political topics or your values may come up. The goal is not to have the "perfect" opinion, but to show that you respect Swiss democratic culture and fundamental values.
4. Practical Preparation
Research your canton and municipality: recent votes, municipal council, local history. Practise answers to common questions aloud in front of a mirror or with friends. How long the interview lasts differs from municipality to municipality, as does the make-up of the commission. In the canton of Aargau, for example, the invitation should state how long the interview takes and who will attend. Ask your municipality, then; you will find an overview under Cantons and municipalities.
Three Golden Rules
- 1Punctuality and appropriate dress show respect.
- 2Speak in the national language (or local dialect if you feel confident).
- 3Be honest. If you do not know the answer to a factual question, admit it and show willingness to learn.
Frequently asked questions
What is assessed in the naturalisation interview?
In the personal interview, the committee assesses your integration: social circle, motivation for naturalisation, knowledge of your municipality and respect for Swiss values. It is not an interrogation, but a personal conversation.
How do I prepare for the naturalisation interview?
Prepare for questions about your everyday life (shopping, clubs, neighbourhood), find out about local features (mayor, village festival) and be authentic. Punctuality and appropriate clothing are important.
In which language is the naturalisation interview held?
The interview is held in the national language of your municipality of residence (German, French, Italian or Romansh). If you feel confident, dialect can usually be spoken as well. If in doubt, ask your municipality.
Can you speak dialect in the naturalisation interview?
Dialect is usually allowed. However, you do not have to speak dialect. Standard German is perfectly acceptable. What matters is that you can express yourself confidently and naturally.
How long does the naturalisation interview last?
The personal interview before the naturalisation committee varies in length depending on the municipality. The exact duration depends on the municipality and the committee.
What happens if you are nervous in the naturalisation interview?
Nervousness is normal and the committee understands it. Focus on authentic answers rather than perfect wording. Good preparation for typical questions (everyday life, municipality, Swiss values) helps to reduce nervousness.
