Naturalisation Test Procedure
To obtain a Swiss passport, you must complete a written naturalisation test in most cantons. It assesses your knowledge of Switzerland at the federal, cantonal, and municipal levels.
Know the process
Knowing the process is the first step, passing the test is the second. The app practises the multiple-choice format of such tests and covers all topics on all 3 levels, with questions created specifically for your municipality.
The app is available in German, French, Italian and Romansh. The naturalisation test is held in the local language.
1. Subject Areas
- Geography: Cantons, cities, rivers, mountains, and lakes.
- History: Key dates such as 1291 and the Federal Constitution of 1848.
- Politics: State structure, direct democracy, rights and duties.
- Society: Social security, education system, culture.
2. Format and Duration
Usually a multiple-choice test. The exact duration varies by canton and municipality and is communicated by the municipal administration. In many municipalities it takes place digitally on a computer. Not every municipality requires a knowledge test: the federal government does not prescribe one, the canton and municipality decide, and basic knowledge can also be checked in a personal interview. Format, duration and passing grade are set out in the information sheet or documents from your municipality of residence. For how it works in your canton, see the cantons overview with municipality search.
3. Passing Grade
The passing grade varies by canton and municipality. The exact requirements are communicated by your municipal administration.
4. Registration and Process
Registration is done directly with the municipal administration, usually once you have met the requirements and submitted your application. After registering, applicants usually receive an official information sheet with the exact topics. The test typically takes place at the town hall or via an official online platform.
